Roxie Johnson grew up in a tiny suburb of New York City and has been making art from an early age. Holding an MFA in Illustration from Syracuse University, Roxie has worked as a fine artist and educator in the visual arts for more than forty years.

Career highlights include a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, a summer followship in printmaking at Skidmore College, and additional studies conducted in Florence, Italy as well as Santa Fe, NM. Select awards have been received from the Palm Springs Art Museum and NAWA (The National Association of Women Artists). Roxie has also been recognized by the Smithsonian Institute for her greeting card design.

Roxie describes her approach as “intrinsically method-based, focusing on the nature of human consciousness and the ongoing dialogue we hold with an ever-changing and disintegrating material world. Employing no exact plan or preliminary draft, I invite abandon and discovery to play a pivotal role in the genesis of each work of art.”

The artist’s process incorporates collage, repetitive layering, mark-making, scraping and peeling away, all with the intent of “revealing an odd beauty andunderlying sense of order to life’s impermanence.”
